Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, this wine is another expression of TarraWarra Chardonnay. Made without yeast or acid addition, the wine is matured in French oak for 10 months. It is crossflow filtered without fining before bottling at the Estate. This Chardonnay is quite a departure from our usual Chardonnay. The perfumed aroma of citrus fruits with a hint of oak flows through the very fine and long palate, with higher acidity and a singular linearity to the palate. A wine to drink and enjoy now or cellar for 10 or more years.
South Block was planted to 100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay on our only southern facing site in 2002. Mendoza is a clone noted for its low phenolics, higher acidity, and hen and chicken bunch structure. Vine material was sourced from Leeuwin Estate, in WA it is the predominant Chardonnay clone.
The season leading up to the 2016 harvest saw warmer conditions through Spring and up to Chritsmas, bringing ripening forward. January and February were similar to 2015, with cool nights during ripening allowed for retention of acid and fine flavor development. Yields were 7 tonnes per hectare. The block ripens over later than other blocks due to the southerly aspect of this site.
