The combination of site, vintage and clonal selection, has produced a wine which epitomises cool climate Shiraz.
A co-ferment of the Shiraz with two percent Roussanne gives a lifted brambly perfume to the 2016 wine. The palate has flesh and structure with lovely definition. This wine will age well for at least 10 years.
The warmth of the 2016 vintage in the Yarra Valley produced perfect conditions for our later ripening varieties with harvest around 2 weeks earlier than 2015. The vines achieved ideal ripeness and flavor balance. Yield was 7 tonnes per hectare.
The shallow soils, free drainage and high elevation of J-Block made this the perfect site for Shiraz vines. The soils include lean granite, loam and clay. North-west facing.
Gorgeous ruby-purple hue, perhaps bolstered by it being co-fermented with 2% viognier. While it has plenty of tangy, juicy spicy plum fruit and juniper berry flavours, it’s savoury with appealing smoky, toasty oak and salami notes. What sets it apart are the lovely, supple yet fine, tannins. 2020 Halliday Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner, 95 Points
