The MDB wines are named after the owner of TarraWarra Estate and his son – Marc and Daniel Besen. Made only in years when we feel there is an outstanding parcel we would like to keep separate, 2015 is the third time we have made an MDB Chardonnay.
Once the primary ferment is complete for all Chardonnay wines, we do not rack or move the wine for 11 months. This means each barrel is unique and allows us to refine our selections to decide what will make up the Reserve, Estate and potentially an MDB wine.
In making this wine we are looking for a true reflection of a particular site on the property, as well as a wine that will age well for at least 10 years.
The 2015 vintage was excellent, with a mild to warm summer. Good winter rain helped the vines retain balance and health through to harvest. Harvest was quite early due to the warmer start to spring and the fruit quality was superb.

The combination of nougat, white peach and cashew creates a sublime bouquet. The palate is long, silky and seamless, with perfectly balanced firmness. For all that, this wine is comparatively understated, needing time, but it certainly makes a statement. Winewise, Lester Jesberg
Bright, medium to light yellow colour with a fresh, bright bouquet of lemon, honey and fragrant blossoms. A delightful nose, with brilliant primary fruit the main act. Great intensity and clarity on the palate. Superb purity and precision. A lovely wine. Indeed, a great wine. The Real Review, Huon Hooke, 97 Points
Named MDB after TarraWarra’s owner and his son – Marc and Daniel Besen. A wine only released in exceptional vintages – Yarra Valley 2015 was certainly one of those. All indications suggest another recent vintage will follow-up, but that’s a story for another day. This 2015 is only the third release of this wine. Struck match, flinty, fig, caramelised peach. Fleshy stone fruit is king. Pillows of soft fruit ride effortlessly across the tongue. Almost weightless. Add a subtle nutty caress, fruit and acid balance is sublime. Age is no barrier here but it will shine further more with time in bottle. Q Wine, Steve Leszczynski
