Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, the fruit batches from each block are kept entirely separate in barrel over the 10 months in oak. Some wild fermentation provided interesting aromas and texture to the final blend.
Although a very high acid year, we did no malolactic fermentation, knowing how the wines develop in bottle. A wine of very fine complexity it displays lime and white peach aromas. The flavour is long and seamless on the palate with fruit that is tightly wound with minerality and lime zest. A wine to drink and enjoy now or cellar for 10 or more years. We believe it is one of the best Reserves we’ve made.
The heritage blocks of B and C and D have a north-west aspect and represent a perfect site for Chardonnay. The two blocks have deep soils and a cool micro-climate. South Park is TarraWarra Estate’s only south facing vineyard. Planted with Mendoza clone, the longer ripening period helps to provide structure and fresh acidity to the Reserve wine blend.
One of our coolest vintages, 2011 presented many seasonal challenges. High rainfall and late ripening gave us our vintage mantra – “Be Brave”. We held off picking for 3 weeks, and were rewarded with fruit with excellent flavor and in perfect condition.
